2001年、私がU-17日本代表監督としてチームをヨーロッパの大会に連れて行ったときのことです。
日本チームの選手たちは、ドイツ、フランス、イタリア、ブラジル、イングランドの5ヶ国の選手たちと同じホテルに泊まっていました。
朝、ホテルの食堂まで食事をとるために降りていった時のことです。私は日本チームの監督として、他の国の監督と「おはよう」と挨拶をし、握手を交わしました。
周囲を見渡しました。その瞬間、私は、絶望の底に転がり落ちたのです。
